Slate is a fine-grained, foliate metamorphic rock - the finest grained of all foliated metamorphic rock, to be exact. Slate is most commonly grey, but also is seen in purple, green and cyan depending upon the geographical location where it was formed. It is mainly composed of the minerals quartz and muscovite or illite, often along with biotite, chlorite, hematite, and pyrite.

As a building material, slate has been used for centuries as roofing tile, as well as interior and exterior flooring. It possesses two lines of 'breakability' that allows for it to be split into thin sheets that retain its natural appearance while remaining flat and easy to stack. It's perfect for roofing tiles because has a very low water absorption index and requires very little processing, which means it's actually eco-friendly.

We're pleased to tell you that all of our slate projects here at Lavender Way use reclaimed roofing tiles from older homes. They're sanded, sealed and reinforced so they won't easily crumble or break. Your imagination is the only limit with these...we'll do our best to create whatever you dream up!
