Don`t Look Now?
――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
Frail Travelers, deftly flickering over the flowers; Of living flowers against the heedless blue Of summer days, what sends them dancing through This fiery-blossomed revel of the hours?
Theirs are the musing silences between The enraptured crying of shrill birds that make Heaven in the wood while summer dawns awake; And theirs the faintest winds that hush the green.
And they are as my soul that wings its way Out of the starlit dimness into morn: And they are as my tremulous being--born To know but this, the phantom glare of day.
n "Butterflies", Siegfried Sassoon, 1920
The evolution of our bodies as they age is a most amazing metamorphosis. It’s like watching the beautiful butterfly turn back into that hairy, wrinkled, funny looking caterpillar. Pieces and parts are not failing us, but most certainly changing. Only to emerge with a new self. Let’s look at the new 40(50)+ alphabet for an update:
Adult Acne Alternative medicine Assisted care Don’t look now....
Bi-focal Bi-annual By-stander, but Don’t look now....
Cellulite Can’t have’s, way too many to list Don’t look now... Those Damned D’s: Dyed hair Dry skin Double chin Drooping skin Dimpled knees, you know - the ones we would make fun of on older women? No definition to the knee area, looked more like rhinoceros skin? Well... Don’t look now..... Ears, they elongate. But that doesn’t improve our hearing capacity, so why? Eyesight, what a challenge that has become.
Don’t look now..... Fat and Flatulence, hand in hand Facelifts *see S’s
Don’t look now.....
Two very dreaded, telling words:
Grey hair, much as we try, it keeps Glistening Gravity, it keeps us Grounded and pulls at the skin, pulls at a few other things too, like the downward ascension of breasts and posteriors, earlobes and noses. Not even going to talk about what droops on our men! I for one am a bit tired of trying to defy the enormous force of the gravitational pull on my body. Don’t look now.....
Historians are what we’ve become…. Hormone Replacement Therapy – enough said Hearing, it’s going, going…. Don’t look now.....
Incontinence, boy what is that about?
Add another word to our increasing vocabulary, and don’t sneeze… Don't Look now..... We now Jiggle like Jell-O *see
W’s
Laugh Lines, Let’s have Lots of them! Don’t look now....
Memory, can’t do with out it, but sure have a hard time finding it sometimes. Where did I put that? Motivation, well, it exists in all of us, but the degree of drive is well, not as urgent as we move forward in time. Now we re-organize our priorities to match our motivation and drive. Or is it we re-organize our motivation and drive to match our priorities? Or do we re-organize our drive to match our priorities and motivation? Don’t look now.....
What used to be Perky and Pointed is
Pleasing and
Plump,
Pliable and Pouchy
Don’t look now..... The Terrible T’s, at one time we were concerned about our children and the Terrible Two’s, but Through Thick and Thin our bodies are with us…
Thick waist Thick thighs Thick ankles Thinning hair and Thinning skin Don’t look now....
our delicate Vanity in our Victorian shape Don’t look now.....
Wonderful W’s? I don’t think so Wrinkles Waffle (no, not food) Wiggle * see J Wattle, can we talk about the under arm wattle! Don’t look now.... Yoga for the body and soul
Used to be I could languish in the tub reading and reflecting, languishing now equates a stiff back. I have to put my glasses on to shave my legs. I wear my reading glasses just to sign my name, AND now I have to use a magnifying mirror to apply make-up and Oh, can we talk about the chin and mustache hairs!?
No longer do I need to pluck my eyebrows, I trim them with scissors. Just have to top them off from time to time.
Don’t look now....
So we try the anti-aging vitamin pills, push-up miracle bras, under eye re-vitalizing cream, alpha hydroxy retinol skin lotions, and then have to turn around and use anti-pimple lotions. The creams reversed the process alright. No Thanks! But what’s left when we undo all that?!
Don’t look now..…….
Are you Ready? Just ourselves –plain, simple and beautiful!
Well, I’m going to pop a couple of cool mint tea bags on my old bags, elevate my hoofs and reflect on more signs of the coming of age. That’s the best part. I’m going to spend time getting acquainted with the new me and rejoice in the coming of my new age.
P.S. Rejoice with Humor and Grace The metamorphosis is complete: P.S.S. Don’t worry, I forgot some of the letters, or was it intentional? R.K.Habunek 6/7/00© http://www.butterflyalphabet.com/
